SR 121 repaving projects to begin in LaCrosse

Staff report
Monday, January 25, 2016 4:25 PM

Two repaving projects covering 16 miles of State Road 121 from the Alachua County line to U.S. 441 are about to begin and run into the spring.

The first Florida Department of Transportation project will begin next week and will include resurfacing a 6-mile stretch of SR 121 from Worthington Springs to LaCrosse. Ground-in rumble stripes will be added to rural roadway shoulders and along the centerline and the right turn lane to County Road 236 will be widened to provide a new bike lane, according to a news release

Lane closures are scheduled weekdays after 8:30 a.m. and could extend up to two miles.

Improvements between Northwest 202nd Place and just south of the CSX railroad crossing in LaCrosse include installing new pedestrian street lighting, constructing new welcome signs at the town limits and town hall, adding new 5-foot wide sidewalks to connect with existing sidewalks and adding handicap-accessible ramps.

The pedestrian enhancements are funded through the federal Transportation Alternatives Program. The FDOT hired V.E. Whitehurst and Sons, Inc. of Williston to do the work at a cost of $3.4 million.

Paving the 10-mile section of SR 121 between LaCrosse and U.S. 441 is scheduled to begin in late February. V.E. Whitehurst and Sons, Inc. is also doing this work at a cost of $3.8 million.

Rumble striping will also be added to shoulders and the center line. Lane closures are allowed from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and could extend up to two miles. Additionally, no lane closures are allowed from 9 to 9:30 a.m. in the vicinity of Northwest 67th Place.

Drivers are reminded that speeding fines are doubled when workers are present in the work zone. Traffic entering SR 121 during lane closures when flaggers are not present should only enter the road when traffic is headed in the same direction they are traveling.
